Frequently asked questions
Do I need an e-matrica for Hungarian motorways?
Yes. All vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes (category D1) need a valid e-matrica for motorways and expressways. Hungary uses a fully digital system — no physical sticker. Your license plate is registered in a central database.
What happens if I drive without an e-matrica in Hungary?
Base penalty: HUF 27,790 (≈€73). If unpaid for over 60 days, it escalates to HUF 95,730 (≈€250). Multiple cameras across the motorway can each trigger a separate fine, so the total can grow quickly.
Are motorcycles exempt in Hungary?
Motorcycles are charged under the D1 category but some routes waive them in practice. The national D1 vignette covers them; there is no separate motorcycle category.
How long is the 10-day vignette valid?
The weekly (10-day) vignette is valid from the start date you choose plus 9 more calendar days, ending at 23:59 on the 10th day.
Is there a grace period if I forget to buy the vignette?
Yes — you have 60 minutes after entering the motorway to purchase an e-matrica and avoid a fine. After 60 minutes, automatic cameras trigger penalties.
Does the vignette cover all Hungarian motorways?
The national D1 vignette covers every tolled motorway in Hungary. There are also cheaper county-level (megye) vignettes if you only travel within one region — but for transit trips, the national version is required.
